Q: Is this just for kid's bikes? What kind of bikes do you need?
A: No, this isn't just for kids! We're trying to gather bikes for kids and adults. So, we're looking for high quality bikes in all shapes and sizes. Click here for more about what kinds of bikes we're looking for.
Q: What if my bike is in really bad shape?
A: If it is trashed, rusted out, seized up, or thinking about it makes you queasy, we can't use it, and neither can other programs. If it was a high quality bike to begin with, and just needs some repairs or a basic tune-up to get running again, it will be of use to the program. Q: Is my donation tax deductible?
A: No, we don't have a tax-exempt ID# to provide. However, if you donate your bike through EMS, Wheelworks, or Giant Cycling World, they are offering a valuable coupon to thank you for your donation.
Q: What about Bikes Not Bombs? Don't they also collect and refurbish bikes?
A: Yes, Bikes Not Bombs in Jamaica Plain has been a leader in bicycle education and bike recycling. They have outstanding programs in youth development, vocational training, and international bicycle projects. They are partnering with us on bike safety education, and many bikes donated through Roll it Forward will end up supporting Bikes not Bombs. Our programs are working closely together to ensure that our bike collections don't interfere with their valuable work.
Q: Do people who get a bike have to do anything to earn it?
A: Yes, every bike recipient needs to complete a bike safety education workshop and must demonstrate safe riding skills. They also must agree to ride courteously and with a helmet.
Q: Do I get anything in exchange for my bike donation?
A: When you donate through EMS, Wheelworks, or Giant Cycling World, they are offering coupons you might be interested in!
Q: Who will my bike go to? Can I decide who I give it to?
A: Logistically we are unable to match bikes to specific individuals or groups ahead of time. But rest assured we are matching bikes with groups that have a demonstrated need for bikes and an interest in using them.
